  1. In the arts, a general term used to describe
  2. the 20th century's conscious attempt to break
  3. with the artistic traditions of the 19th
  4. century; it is based on a concern with form
  5. and the exploration of technique as opposed
  6. to content and narrative. In the visual arts,
  7. direct representationalism gave way to
  8. abstraction (see abstract art); in
  9. literature, writers experimented with
  10. alternatives to orthodox sequential
  11. storytelling, such as stream of
  12. consciousness; in music, the traditional
  13. concept of key was challenged by atonality;
  14. and in architecture, Functionalism ousted
  15. decorativeness as a central objective.
  16. Critics of Modernism have found in it an
  17. austerity that is seen as dehumanizing.
  18. Modernism as a movement is followed by
  19. Post-Modernism.
